A few of the many things

she denies ever doing,

has claimed no memory of,

before he was taken away.

And before she refused to take

him back. Before the white

in his voice came in.

Before she helped raise

a partner’s son. Her own

with the Salvation Army.

Before it became a story

he’d tell just about anyone,

but never his only child.

13 Because, 17 years in, it still didn’t quite seem to my mother she had done all she could. She took notes. Four weeks of arguments. On a “seafood month” calendar from the office.
